How to Start? A Talk and Theatre Workshop with Rachael Nanyonjo

The event started off with a talk featuring Rachael Nanyonjo, Co-Creator and Director of Recognition, hosted by Talawa’s New Work Producer David Gilbert.

In their conversation they addressed the process of creating the play Recognition, in which the story of Samuel Taylor Coleridge features, bringing to light the rich legacy of Black classical music in Britain. The talk also explored creative ways to honour and remember those who have gone before us, drawing upon the resources of the archive to celebrate the legacies of Black artistry.

After the talk, attendees took part in a 2-hour theatre workshop led by Rachael. The workshop explored a range of theatrical games, theatre devising tools and movement-based storytelling that used the question of How to Start? as a jumping off point when thinking about an idea and how to begin making new work.
